The Davidia involucrata, also known as the Handkerchief Tree or Dove Tree, is a deciduous, medium-sized tree. This tree is also often planted as a shrub.

Growth habit

The Davidia involucrata, Handkerchief Tree, is a slow-growing tree that bears beautiful white bracts with small flowers in spring (in later years). These look like hanging handkerchiefs in the wind.

Total height

The tree can reach a maximum height of 10 to 15 meters. In most cases, this tree will reach a more limited height of 6-10 meters in the European climate.

Branches and fruits

The branches are green in their young stage and turn yellowish-brown as they age. In autumn, brown fruits appear, which can be up to 3 cm in size.

Leaf shape and leaf color

The leaf of this young Handkerchief Tree is heart-shaped and has a fresh dark green color, with a size of about 10 cm.

Flowering time

When the tree is about 10 years old, it blooms in spring with yellowish-green flowers, alongside which the large, white bracts appear, which is why the Handkerchief Tree is so famous.

Location

It thrives well on almost all types of soil and prefers a nutrient-rich soil that retains moisture. This tree can be planted in both full sun and partial shade.

How to plant the tree?

Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
