Origin

The Eriobotrya japonica, better known as the Loquat or Japanese Medlar, originates from the regions of China and Japan. This beautiful tree is renowned for its juicy, exotic fruits and is often cultivated for its decorative leaves and flowers. Bringing a touch of Far Eastern style to any garden, the Japanese Medlar adds charm with its rich history and lovely appearance.

Evergreen

The Japanese Medlar is a special fruit tree that retains its leaves in winter, remaining green throughout the year. This feature adds a splash of color to your garden even during the coldest months. Enjoy the exotic sensation of picking fresh fruit while the tree keeps its leaves, making it a striking and practical addition to any garden.

Total Height and Pruning

The Japanese Medlar tree can grow to 3 to 4 meters in height and is easy to prune. If necessary, the best time for pruning is at the end of summer. With its flexibility in pruning and moderate height, this tree is an ideal choice for gardens of various sizes. It can be easily maintained for healthy growth and an attractive appearance.

Leaf Shape and Color

The leaves of the Japanese Medlar tree are elongated and have a green-gray color. This unique leaf shape and color add a touch of elegance to the garden, making it an attractive choice for lovers of evergreen plants.

Flowering

The Japanese Medlar tree blooms from March to May with beautiful white-yellow flowers. This flowering period adds a charming and vibrant atmosphere to your garden, making it a delight to admire up close during spring.

Fruits

After flowering, fruits develop on the plant, which can be harvested in August-September. The fruits are orange-yellow and measure 3 to 5 cm in size.

Location

For optimal flowering and fruit development, the Japanese Medlar thrives best in a warm and sheltered location. Choose a sunny spot in your garden to plant this beautiful tree and enjoy abundant flowering with delicious fruits.

Frost Sensitivity

The Japanese Medlar can tolerate light frost (up to about -5°C), but should be moved to a frost-free location during severe frost. If this is not possible, the tree should be well wrapped up.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure that it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting mix.
  3. Place the planting hole at a height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Place a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly in the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a small mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the soil.
