The Peanut Butter Tree

The Clerodendrum trichotomum is also known in Dutch as the Peanut Butter Tree or Fortune Tree. When the leaves of these plants are rubbed together, they emit the scent of peanut butter. This is also the reason for the name Peanut Butter Tree.

Leaf shape and size

The leaf is oval with a pointed tip and serrated edge and can grow up to 20 cm in size.

Flowering and growth habit

Originally, the Clerodendrum trichotomum grows wild in China and Japan. The plant is a vigorous grower and blooms late in the summer with pinkish-red calyces and white flowers. The white-pink flowers appear in the months of August and September.

Bees and butterflies

The calyces smell very sweet. This scent is detectable from a great distance. Therefore, the tree is also frequently visited by bees and butterflies, resulting in a natural garden with insects.

Fruits

After flowering, blue fruits appear on the Clerodendrum trichotomum, providing a striking contrast with the green leaves. Additionally, these blue fruits are attractive to birds.

Total height and crown shape

The Peanut Butter Tree can reach a height of 3 to 6 meters and then develops a wide, flat crown. It is a small tree often cultivated for its attractive flowers, fragrant fruits, and decorative leaves.

How to plant the tree?

Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
