Total height and growth habit
The Cornus mas 'Golden Glory', also known as the Yellow Dogwood, is a small tree with a moderate growth rate that can reach up to 4 meters in height. Its growth habit is pyramidal and upright.
Leaf color and deciduous nature
This cultivar features large, glossy, green leaves. It is a deciduous tree.
Flowering
It blooms profusely in spring (March) with golden yellow flowers, creating a stunning contrast against the still bare background of the garden. It is a striking tree that attracts numerous pollinators, including bees and butterflies.
Fruits
In summer, oval red fruits appear on the plant. These dogwood fruits are also edible and have a sour taste.
Bees, butterflies, and birds
Due to its abundant flowering and the subsequent berries, it is a plant that attracts bees and butterflies when in bloom. It also serves as a food source for birds when the berries are present.
Location
The Cornus mas 'Golden Glory' prefers a sunny to semi-shady location. It thrives best in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil and can tolerate drought and severe frost well.
How to plant the tree?
- Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
- Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
- Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
- Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
- Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
- Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
- Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
