The Ginkgo biloba

The Ginkgo biloba 'Menhir' is the small-leaved and columnar Japanese Gingko tree.

Leaf shape and color

The leaves of the Ginkgo biloba 'Menhir' are smaller than those of the normal Japanese Gingko tree and are greenish-gray in color. The leaves are elongated and have a characteristic fan-shaped form with fine incisions along the edges.

Autumn coloring

In autumn, the bright green leaves of the tree transform into a palette of vibrant colors, ranging from bright yellow to deep gold and sometimes even orange. This creates a beautiful autumnal spectacle.

Growth habit and total height

What makes the Ginkgo biloba 'Menhir' so desirable is its growth habit. The tree has a compact and full growth habit that is evenly distributed over the tree. With a maximum height of 4-6 meters, this tree is versatile. It can be easily planted in a container or in a small location in the garden.

Diseases

The young Small-leaved Columnar Japanese Gingko tree, Ginkgo biloba 'Menhir', is generally resistant to most pests and diseases.

Location

Grows well in any soil type, provided it is sufficiently nourished. The Small-leaved Columnar Japanese Gingko tree prefers full sun to partial shade.

Form and pruning

Due to its compact growth habit, the Ginkgo biloba 'Menhir' requires little pruning. It is only necessary to prune branches to maintain the tree in shape/size.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
