The Edgeworthia chrysantha, also known as the Paperbush, is a small tree or shrub. It is distinctive due to its striking bloom.

The Leaf

The leaf of the Edgeworthia chrysantha is dark green and has a narrow shape.

Autumn Coloration

In autumn, the leaf changes to yellow hues before falling from the Paperbush.

However, the most notable feature of the Edgeworthia chrysantha is its flowering. Even in autumn, the flower buds are visible, blooming in the months of February to March. The flowers are golden-yellow and appear at the end of almost every branch.

After flowering, green-purple berries appear on the faded flower clusters.

The fruits are not edible and are also called stone fruits due to the hard pit in the center.

The Paperbush gets its name from the bark. In the past, the bark of the Paperbush was used to make high-quality paper.

The Edgeworthia chrysantha prefers a sunny to semi-shady location and well-draining soil with sufficient nutrients.

Wind Resistance

Due to its thin leaves, the Edgeworthia chrysantha has moderate wind resistance.

Frost / Cold Wind

The Paperbush also does not tolerate severe frost or cold wind. For these reasons, it is advisable to plant it in a sheltered location or cover it during severe frost.
