Tree Maintenance

Irrigation:

Especially during the first year, regularly check if the soil is sufficiently moist.

The best way to check is to feel at a depth of 5 to 10 cm whether the soil is moist and therefore slightly sticky. If not, watering is necessary. For young trees, a full 10-liter watering can is sufficient. Note: In summer, it is advisable to check more frequently if the soil is moist. Also, in winter, check whether the soil is not drying out, especially for evergreen trees.

Fertilization:

In the first year after planting, fertilization is not necessary because there is sufficient nutrition in the soil improver and the root ball of the tree.

After the first year, it is possible to fertilize with an organic fertilizer, which we also offer in our online shop.

Pruning Forms:

Regarding the pruning of trees, there are endless possibilities, especially since we are working with a young product, and the end result can be determined by the person maintaining or pruning the tree. Below, we explain some pruning methods:

1: Training Pruning

This pruning form is applied to guide the tree to its final appearance.

For example, if you want to grow the tree upwards so that a tree with a bare trunk and a crown above it, like most trees in the street, is formed, the tree should be pruned to create a bare trunk with a crown. Use a trunk-to-crown ratio of 1:1. This means a tree of 4 meters has a trunk of 2 meters and a crown of 2 meters. This ensures that the tree remains in good condition and is slowly grown upwards. It is also important to keep the main branch clear. Remove competing branches so that a main branch is formed, which can be attached to a stake with binding wire if necessary.

2: Maintenance Pruning

In this pruning form, it is important to remove dead branches, as well as branches that grow crookedly or rub against each other, to prevent future problems.

3: Formative Pruning

This pruning method is applied to keep your tree in shape. This can be applied in various ways.

For example, for a tree that you feel does not need to be higher than it already is, it is best to cut out the main tip and then maintain this annually to keep the tree at the same height.

Formative pruning is also often applied to espalier trees because they have the function of growing like a hedge in height. Maintenance is necessary here because otherwise, the tree will naturally find its own way, and the hedge effect will disappear."
