Tree Form

The Hamamelis intermedia 'Orange Beauty,' also known as Witch Hazel, is naturally a regularly branched shrub, which we offer at Amitis in a tree form.

Growing Habit

The Hamamelis intermedia 'Orange Beauty' has an upright growth habit, reaching a maximum height of 4 to 6 meters without pruning.

Trunk and Branches

The trunk and branches of this young Witch Hazel tree are brown-gray in color, providing a beautiful contrast to the green foliage.

However, the most significant ornamental feature of the Hamamelis intermedia 'Orange Beauty' is its flowering. The Witch Hazel blooms early in spring, in the months of January-February when hardly any other plant or tree is in bloom. The tree then blooms with stunning orange-yellow flowers on bare wood.

Delightful Fragrance

These flowers resemble a bunch of colored threads and emit a delightful fragrance.

The Hamamelis intermedia 'Orange Beauty' prefers a spot in the sun or partial shade, where it has access to sufficiently nutritious soil. It is also essential that the soil is well-draining.

Regarding pruning, the Hamamelis intermedia 'Orange Beauty' doesn't require much. Due to its relatively slow growth, this tree is rarely pruned. Of course, it is always possible to apply some shaping pruning if necessary.

How to plant the tree?

  1. Determine the final location of the tree and ensure it is free from cables, debris, old plants, and other obstacles that may hinder the tree's growth.
  2. Dig a planting hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting substrate.
  3. Adjust the planting hole to the height where the root ball fits and firmly press the soil.
  4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to settle. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.
  5. Place the tree or plant in the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this can cause root rot.
  6. Insert a tree stake or bamboo stake firmly into the ground on the side of the tree where the most wind comes from.
  7. Now, place the watering ring or create a mound of soil around the tree so that water can seep into the ground.
