Flowering

The Ginkgo biloba ‘Princeton Sentry’, also known as the young Japanese nut tree, has a beautiful color. In spring, this tree develops yellow-green leaves with a lovely fan shape. The advantage of the male tree is that this Princeton Sentry does not produce fruit, making it very suitable for streets or even (small) gardens. The female form produces unpleasant-smelling fruits.

Growth habit

This young Japanese nut tree has an upright, columnar growth habit that is perfect for narrow gardens, avenues, or urban environments. The Princeton Sentry grows slowly but steadily and retains its neat, upright shape for many years. The branches grow vertically upward, giving the tree an elegant appearance and taking up little space. Do you have a narrow garden and still want a beautiful tree? Then this nut tree is well suited for your garden!

Total height

The Princeton Sentry can grow to a total height of 10 to 15 meters and 3 to 5 meters in width. This nut tree grows slowly, especially in its younger years.

Location

The Ginkgo biloba ‘Princeton Sentry’ prefers a sunny to semi-shaded location. This young Japanese nut tree grows best in well-drained soil but is also tolerant of less ideal conditions such as dry or urban soils. It is resistant to heat, cold, and wind. In its early years, a sheltered spot is preferable, but once well-rooted, the tree becomes very strong.

How to plant the tree?

1. Determine the final location of the tree and make sure it is free of cables, debris, old plants, and other things that could hinder the tree's growth.

2. Dig a planting hole that is twice as wide as the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole thoroughly and mix the excavated soil with (organic) garden soil or planting soil.

3. Adjust the depth of the planting hole so that the root ball fits perfectly, and press the soil down firmly.

4. Fill the planting hole with water and wait for it to fully drain. Check if the root ball is sufficiently moist.

5. Place the tree or plant into the planting hole. It is extremely important that the tree is not planted too deep, as this could cause the roots to rot.

6. Insert a sturdy tree stake or bamboo stick into the ground on the side from which the strongest wind comes.

7. Create a watering ring or form a small mound of soil around the tree to allow water to seep into the ground around it.
