Which trees bloom in summer?
Summer is the second flowering season of the year, and certainly not the least. While many people think that flowering trees only stand out in spring, some species really come into their own as temperatures rise. From the first white bell-shaped blossoms in June to lavish pink plumes that keep flowering into September.
In this blog, we take you through the summer, from the early bloom in June to the late bloomers in August and September. That way you know exactly which special flowering tree is at its best, and when.
June: the first summer bloom
June is the transition month par excellence. The late spring bloom continues, but at the same time the first true summer-flowering trees get going. A great moment to plant something that surprises the neighbours while all their spring trees have already finished flowering.
Tip: Make sure these early summer-flowering trees get a sunny spot. That benefits both the bloom and the leaf colour.
White-flowering trees in June:
- Styrax japonicus 'Evening Light': blooms abundantly in May and June with hanging bell-shaped white flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark purple foliage.
- Gleditsia triacanthos 'Sunburst': flowers in the same period with inconspicuous yellow-green blooms, but its true ornamental value lies in the golden yellow foliage that stays on the tree all summer.
White-yellow flowering trees in June:
- Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent': starts flowering as early as June with white-yellow fragrant clusters that attract bees and butterflies in large numbers.
July and August: the peak of summer bloom
July and August are the absolute peak of the summer bloom. The most spectacular species are at their finest then, with lavish, fragrant flowers in warm shades of pink. If you want a tree that truly stands out while the rest of the garden is in its summer green, choose one that flowers during this period.
Pink-flowering trees in summer:
The Persian silk tree is the eye-catcher of the summer. With its finely feathered, exotic-looking foliage and lavish pink plumes, it gives the garden a subtropical feel. The three cultivars at Amitis each have their own character:
- Albizia julibrissin 'Ombrella': has a broad parasol shape and flowers very richly from a young age in July and August
- Albizia julibrissin 'Evi's Pride': stands out for its stunning brownish-red to deep purple foliage combined with the pink bloom
- Albizia julibrissin 'Tropical Dream': is the most winter-hardy of the three, flowers from a young age and keeps going strong into September.
White-yellow flowering trees in summer:
- Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent': flowers from July through September with white to yellow flower plumes.
September: late summer bloom
A number of species continue flowering until mid-September. That stands out all the more, because in this period most other trees only show their summer green without any further ornamental value.
Flowering summer trees for a small garden
Even with a small garden, you can enjoy flowering trees in summer. Both the Albizia 'Evi's Pride' and the 'Tropical Dream' grow compactly and are well suited to a pot on the terrace, provided they are placed in a warm, sheltered spot with plenty of sun. The Styrax japonicus 'Evening Light' is also suitable for a small garden and grows slowly with a neat shape.
